No heat for students at HISD elementary school

HOUSTON – A cold start to the day for hundreds of students at an HISD elementary school. They had to bundle up because the school had no heat.

Parents said they had no idea when they dropped their kids off at Burbank Elementary School in northeast Houston Monday morning.

"I don't think it's right, you know," said Maria Alamis.  "I just think they should at least call school off and replace it with another day. I don't even take my kids out because it's been cold. And I think they're going to be warm in school and there's no heater."

She took her kids home, afraid, she said, that they would get sick.  Other parents told Local 2 the same.

HISD released a statement saying in part, "A water main was broken over the weekend by contractors working on a renovation project at Burbank Elementary School. As a result, the campus temporarily lost access to water, causing the boiler and heating system to shut down. Maintenance crews worked quickly to restore water to the campus by 8 a.m. Monday. The heating system was back online by shortly before noon."

The school district says learning was not disrupted. However, some of the parents told us it was too cold in the school to learn anything.
