HOUSTON – A mother and stepfather are accused of beating an 8-year-old boy with a plastic baseball bat.
Santina Maria Broussard and Syed S. Gillani are charged with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury.

According to court documents, the abuse took place on Feb. 17 at a southwest Houston apartment. The victim, who is Broussard's son, showed up to school with bruises all over his body. He told Child Protective Services and police that Gillani hit him with a bat for not doing well in school, court documents state.
Investigators say the boy told them that his mother held his arms so Gillani could beat him.
Broussard has posted a $5,000 bond. Gillani is being held in the Harris County Jail without bond.
