Man shot, killed in southwest Houston

Investigators searching for killer

HOUSTON – Police are working to figure out who shot a man and left him for dead on a southwest Houston sidewalk.

Homicide investigators arrived at the Coral Island apartments at about 2 a.m. Sunday. Paramedics tried to save a man who was shot, but he died at the scene.

"It appears he may have been returning from a club. He was dressed as if he was out for the night. However, he didn't have shoes," said Richard Martinez with the Houston Police Department.

Witnesses tell police they heard one gunshot, then found the victim on the sidewalk.

As the sun rose, residents were learning of the murder.

"Yes, and just right around the corner from me. I didn't hear anything," said resident Mary Jackson.

Jackson has lived at the complex for two years. She said this is the second shooting death. She usually walks her dogs alone.

"We need some kind of protection. There's supposed to be a security guard during the night time, but I haven't seen him walking around lately,"
said Jackson.

The identity of victim has not been released. Investigators said the victim, believed to be in his 20s, had a bag from a fast food restaurant nearby, but they aren't sure if he lived at the complex.

"We don't know if he lives here at the complex or not. We are assuming he might since he doesn't have any shoes on," said officer Martinez.

Police aren't sure if anything was taken. When the medical examiner was on scene the man did not have any identification.
