HOUSTON - Houston police say a woman driving an SUV slammed into a man crossing I-10 near John Ralston early Friday morning.

"She tried to avoid him but ended up hitting him on the front left of her vehicle," Sgt. Izaguirre says.

Officials said around 2:30 a.m., the woman stopped a few miles away at the nearest exit and called 911 to report the crash.

Police are not sure why the man was crossing the freeway, but say the woman who crashed into him will not face charges.

"At this time we are checking her for any impairment but we don't believe she was impaired," Izaguirre explained.

The name of the man killed was not immediately released.

All of the inbound lanes of I-10 were shut down for the investigation, but have since reopened.
