Man found guilty of murder in grandfather's beheading

HOUSTON – The man who beheaded his grandfather with a yard tool will spend the next 70 years in prison. A judge handed down the sentence Wednesday afternoon.

Justin Parris was found guilty Wednesday morning of killing his grandfather, 81-year-old Johnnie Gonzales in 2009. Prosecutors say he stabbed his grandfather and then beheaded him using a garden tool.

Family members were emotional in court as witnesses testified against Parris. His mother and stepsister did not believe Parris was guilty. They stood beside him throughout the trial.

One of the victim's sons told the court that Parris needed help, but that the community needs to be protected.

Prosecutors asked for a sentence of life in prison. Parris' defense attorney said his client has a history of mental illness and deserved a shorter sentence.
