Katy Freeway reopens after big rig, car crash

HOUSTON – Part of the Katy Freeway was shut down early Friday after a hit and run crash involving an 18-wheeler and car.

The crash happened in the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 at Greenhouse Road. Deputies said the victim, a 25-year-old woman, hit the back of the slow-moving semi around 3:30 a.m. The force of the crash peeled off the roof of her car.

She was ejected and taken by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Police said the victim was in serious condition, but conscious and talking to doctors.

There were conflicting reports on the scene about the big rig driver involved. Initially, police said the driver did not stop.  They later said he may have stopped, saw what happened, then left the scene.

HPD's hit and run division took over the case.

Drivers were detoured off the freeway at Barker Cypress. The lanes were reopened at 6:40 a.m.
