HOUSTON – A man was shot and killed Friday, and police said his wife heard his final moments on the phone.
Gabriel Morales, 55, was walking to his home in the 5800 block of West Tidwell Road near Antoine Drive at 2:20 a.m. Friday.
Police said Morales had just finished an overnight construction job and was at a store buying some things for his wife. On the way home, he called his wife and told her he thought he was being followed.
She heard some sort of scuffle and then a gunshot. She went outside and found her husband dead on the sidewalk.
Detectives believe the attacker was trying to rob the victim.
They called him a "family man" who was the victim of a "bad neighborhood."
Police said Morales wife was too distraught to talk, so they will talk to her again Friday afternoon.
They are also expected to canvass the neighborhood to talk to neighbors who may be able to help them come up with a suspect description. They also planned to look at surveillance video from outside the store.
