HOUSTON - The Houston Police Department's newest crime fighter is ready to saddle up and hit the streets.

Officers and horses with the HPD Mounted Patrol welcomed "Smash," their newest crime fighting companion to their ranks on Wednesday.

Smash, who is deaf, was adopted by local girls with autism and Down Syndrome who spent the past several months raising money to help cover the cost of his care, boarding and training.

The girls presented a $10,000 check to the Houston Police Foundation in Smash's name.
