HPD: Mother shot, killed with baby inside home

HOUSTON – Someone went into a northwest Houston apartment and shot and killed a mother with her baby nearby.

Just after 11 a.m. Thursday, the victim called 911. According to police, she had been shot multiple times while her 1-year-old daughter was in the apartment near Hempstead Road and West 43rd.

The mother was rushed to the hospital and died from her injuries about three hours later. Her daughter was not hurt.

Police said there was no sign of forced entry into the apartment and only an iPhone appeared to have been stolen.

"Her husband was able to locate her iPhone about three-fourths of a mile west of here," said Sgt. W.L. Meeler of the Houston Police Department. "We were able to locate that and get a scent."

Police dogs searched and tracked the killer's scent throughout and around the apartment complex.

Meeler said, "He appeared suspicious to a lot of people. The maintenance man thought he was suspicious. Another maintenance man saw him and thought he was suspicious."

Police only have a general description of a thin man wearing dark pants and a grey hoodie.

The woman's husband was at work when she was killed. Her other child was at school. The daughter was placed with other family members.

Police hope to hear from neighbors who might help them figure out who killed the woman. If you have any information, call Houston Police Homicide Division at 713-308-3600.
