HPD: Fight over $20 turns deadly in NW Houston

Police: 25-year-old dead, 15-year-old hurt

HOUSTON – One man is dead and a teen is in the hospital after two people shot at a car full of people in northwest Houston.

Homicide detectives said there were four people inside of the car riddled with bullet holes, and the shots were fired after an altercation over a $20 dollar bill.

"Around 10:35 p.m. (Wednesday) a 15-year-old went into the food store off of Greens Parkway and Fall Lake and asked the clerk to get change for a $20 dollar bill," said Homicide Detective Brian Evans with the Houston Police Department. "The clerk didn't have it, so the teen went outside to the parking lot and asked a group of people if they had change, but instead of giving him change they stole his money.

The 15-year-old went back to the Fall Lakes Apartments across the street and called his cousin.

"The teen's cousin and two other people got into a car and went back to the food store to confront the group of people in the parking lot," said Evans. "Moments later, they leave the scene and at that time, as they were driving down Greens Parkway, two people open fire on them from two different directions."

As the four males continued to drive down the street, they  stopped at the Bayou Oaks Apartments off Ella Boulevard and Rankin Road.

Police said a 25-year-old man who was sitting in the passenger seat was shot and killed at the scene. The 15-year-old was shot in the back and was rushed to Ben Taub General Hospital in good condition. The driver and other passenger were not hurt.

Investigators collected evidence at both scenes for hours, and spoke to people who heard the gunfire.

Police officers put two people in the back of patrol cars and drove off around 3 a.m., but detectives say they are still looking for the gunmen.

Officers did not recover any weapons at either scenes, but they did recover several shell casings inside and outside of the Fall Lakes Apartments.

Anyone with information in this case or on the whereabouts of the suspects is asked to call the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
