HPD Chief McClelland involved in auto-pedestrian accident

HOUSTON – Houston police said Chief Charles McClelland was involved in an auto-pedestrian accident Wednesday morning.

It happened around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday as Chief McClelland was driving his city vehicle in downtown Houston.

HPD PIO John Cannon said McClelland was driving eastbound on Clay Street in the far left lane. He had the green light and looked in the crosswalk before he turned left. McClelland did not see anyone and completed the turn.

Cannon said an adult male stepped off the curb and was hit by McClelland's vehicle.

The man suffered minor injuries to both elbows and was taken to St. Joseph's hospital for observation.

Per department policy, any accident involving a city vehicle will be investigated by the Vehicular Crimes Division.
