HOUSTON - A driver is in custody after a traffic stop turned into a major drug bust, Houston police said.
It all started Thursday around 1 a.m. in the 11900 block of the East Freeway.
Officers said they pulled a truck driver over for several moving violations and the driver consented to a search of the truck and the travel trailer he was towing. Houston Police Department officers said they discovered 54 bundles of marijuana hidden inside the trailer, adding up to an estimated 750 pounds.
The driver was arrested and the drugs were confiscated by investigators. Police said they also seized the 2005 Dodge truck, the 2003 RV trailer and an undisclosed amount of cash.
It is the second time in two weeks officers have found hundreds of pounds of marijuana on a Houston freeway.
On June 17, officers said they found 600 pounds of marijuana and 13 kilograms of methamphetamine inside an excavator. Firefighters had to use heavy equipment to pull the machinery apart and recover the drugs.
In May, the Fort Bend County Task Force found 24 pounds of cocaine, 12 pounds of heroin and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash hidden in car seats and door panels.
