HOUSTON – An east Houston family has been left with an uneasy feeling after two intruders enter their home, forcing a father to fire shots at them.
It happened on East Market Street on the east side.
"I don't even feel safe in my own home. I am in my living room and I am armed," said homeowner Ruben DeVilla.
He was asleep with his wife and daughter when he woke up to the sound of footsteps outside of his bedroom door.
"I open the door, I look over, there is a man standing in my dining room, so I close the door slowly and tell the wife, dial 911," says DeVilla.
He locked the door, grabbed his gun and yelled to the intruder to get out of his house.
"By the time I opened the door, again after I gave him the warning, the 911 operator was with me and I had the gun, he was here," says DeVilla.
Fearing for his life and the safety of his family, he decided to fight back. He swung open the door and opened fire and chased the man.
"Bump against this wall, fire, hitting the coffee maker, one shot there, one shot there, door was open, he ran in that direction," says DeVilla.
That intruder managed to escape all five gunshots, then he ran off the patio, jumped into a red sedan at the corner and took off.
"What if I would have not been here? Would my wife and daughter be safe? What if I would have not been armed? Would I be the victim?" says DeVilla.
He describes the intruder as a Hispanic man in his early 30s, with a medium build and wearing a white t-shirt and dark jeans.
