HISD: Waltrip High School student assaults administrator, campus officer

HOUSTON – A local high school student was arrested after officials say the student assaulted an administrator and a campus officer.

According to Houston ISD, a Waltrip High School student was called to the office when the student assaulted a school administrator and a campus officer.

An HISD spokesperson says the student tried unsuccessfully to get the officer's weapon. We're told the gun remained holstered during the altercation, kept in place by double-locking mechanisms designed to keep it holstered during a struggle.

The student was taken into police custody.

The altercation took place in an isolated location and the school was not placed on lockdown, the district says, and no students were harmed.

"It was kind of crazy. There were about 10 cop cars, there was an ambulance and a fire truck and we were all wondering what happened. It was pretty crazy," said student Emma Johnson.

HISD says the officer and the dean of instruction received minor injuries in the scuffle. Neither were taken to the hospital.

In a notification sent to parents, Waltrip High School Principal Andria Shur says the district takes incidents like this very seriously and the student will face appropriate disciplinary action.

The student has not been identified.
