Hiring Our Heroes job fair held Friday

HOUSTON – In an effort to help Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans reenter the workforce, NBC and KPRC Local 2 are teaming up to bring Hiring Our Heroes job fairs to Houston.

A job fair was held on Friday from 9 a.m. until noon at the Westin Galleria, 5060 West Alabama Street.

The unemployment rate for veterans is just over 12 percent so any help is welcome.

"I've been out since last June and I just got a job a month ago, so it's very difficult," said Carmen Flint with the Army.

"We're excited to participate and we're dedicated to hiring 5,000 over five years," said Emily Harrigan with GE Oil and Gas.

"Military personnel can do pretty much anything you ask of them and they don't require a lot of training and they will exceed your expectations," said George Stroumpos, Ret. Army.

Already, a countless number of service men and women are grateful for the opportunity to serve once again.

"I'm trainable. I can adapt and overcome. It's kind of cliche in the military, but it truly is what we bring to the table," said Capt. Heather Bozeman with the United States Army.

The next job fair targeting veterans and their spouses will be held in Houston on Aug. 9 at Minute Maid Park from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Another is planned for Dec. 6.
