Friends remember man struck by lightning

Man struck, killed identified

ANGLETON, Texas – Friends are sharing stories about an Angleton volunteer firefighter who was struck by lightning and killed.

John Henry Jansvenrensburg worked as a journey man for CenterPoint Energy.

On Saturday, he was working on some power lines on Miller Road 1 in northeast Harris County when storms rolled into the area.

Before he could get out of the way, he was struck by lightning.

Jansvenrensburg was taken to a nearby hospital, then flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center, where he died on Tuesday.

Jansvenrensburg moved to the U.S. from South Africa at 15-years-old.

Not long after, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps.

Jansvenrensburg met his friend Brian Frank in the Marines.

"The guy was selfless. He literally would give the shirt off his back for people," said Frank.

The flag outside the Angleton Volunteer Fire Department was at half staff this Fourth of July.

A visitation for Jansvenrensburg will be Thursday at the Dignity Funeral Home in Clute.

Jansevanrensburg's funeral will be Friday at the Northway Baptist Church in Angleton.

He leaves behind a son, a daughter and his wife Jodi.
