Firefighters rescue woman from burning building

HOUSTON – Firefighters rescued a woman from a southwest Houston apartment building after it caught fire.

The blaze started around 9 p.m. Friday at the Brookhaven Apartments on Fondren Road and Wanda Lane.  When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found one woman trapped on a stairwell in the building.

According to reports, firefighters managed to rescue her and bring her down a ladder to safety.

Firefighters said the blaze started on the bottom level of the complex.  One apartment unit was destroyed by the fire; four other units suffered smoke and water damage.

Arson units are investigating the cause of the fire.
