Father shot, killed at home near 3 children

Police believe victim knew the shooter

HOUSTON – A father of three was shot and killed at his home in southwest Houston.

Around 8 p.m. Friday, police said someone knocked on the front door of a home on Portsmouth Street near Hazard Street.  When the homeowner, 35-year-old answered, the person opened fire, shooting him multiple times.

Detectives said Rowell died by the front door.  His three children were home at the time, and two neighborhood children were spending the night at the house.  The children may have seen Rowell after he had been shot, police said.

Police recovered shell casings by the front door, but there are no known witnesses who may have seen the shooter.

"It's early on in the investigation," said Sgt. Brian Harris, with the Houston Police Department Homicide division.  "We still need to knock on doors, talk to neighbors, and see if anyone else knows anything.  We believe that the assailants knew the victim, and the victim knew the assailants."

Police said Rowell was also the brother-in-law of a Houston police officer.

"Many times, by piecing together the person's life, usually the suspects appear as being the missing piece of that puzzle," Harris said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
