Father shot in front of wife and newborn

HPD: Gunman demanded wallet just before shooting in northeast Houston

HOUSTON – A new father is in critical condition after he was shot during a robbery in northeast Houston, police said.

It was just after 1:00 a.m., when the man, his wife, and their newborn were returning to their apartment complex on Cotillion Drive and Aldine Bender Road Wednesday.

"After they got out of the vehicle, they were approached by a lone male armed with a gun," Detective Ken Nealy of the Houston Police Robbery Division said.

The robber demanded the victim's wallet.  And sometime during that exchange, the victim was shot in the stomach.

"He (the robber) took his (the victim's) wallet and after he took his wallet he got into a dark colored Crown Victoria, left the location, and left the apartment complex in an unknown direction," Detective Nealy said.

The man who was shot was rushed into surgery. He was in critical condition.

Detectives said the bullet that hit him did a lot of internal damage.

The woman and baby were not physically hurt.

The woman was the only witness to the crime.  Police said she is too distraught to talk to them right now, but they will be talking to her to get a better description of the attacker.
