'Dark writings' by Katy Taylor student lead to police investigation

KATY, Texas – A student's notebook is being investigated as a possible threat to students. Inside that notebook were what the school district is describing as 'dark writings.'

School officials say that notebook was only a part of their decision to act. However, administrators say there was never a specific threat made toward this campus, any student or teacher.

"It just really painted a picture here of somebody who need some intervention," said Steve Stanford with Katy ISD.

Stanford says a teacher at Katy Taylor High School found a student's misplaced notebook on campus this week. Stanford says the notebook contained a lot of dark writing that prompted the teacher to involve campus administrators.

"As we started looking at what was in that notebook, started investigating social media, it really gave us a reason for concern," Stanford said.

While he says there were no specific threats made to any students or campuses, the writings and social media postings were enough to pull the student from class and involve the Katy ISD Police Department.

District Superintendent Alton Frailey then sent a letter to parents and employees reading in part, "Research shows that in cases involving school violence, someone knew something about the threat but never alerted anyone. Please take this time to talk to your children about the important role we all have in keeping our schools safe by reporting potential threats."

School officials say they don't yet know if criminal charges will be filed. They did say the student has not been arrested, but is now in the care of a mental health facility.

School officials could not be specific, but did say this student's history was also taken into account in making the decision to remove him from campus.
