Community leaders help keep HISD students safe on last day of school

Ministers walk halls at 5 campuses

HOUSTON – A group called Ministers Supporting Precinct 7 will be at five Houston Independent School District high schools Thursday for the last day of school.

While students say their goodbyes, the group said it will be dedicated to making sure the final day of school is peaceful and calm.

The Safe Start to Summer Program started five years ago after community leaders noticed an increase in violence on the last day of school from students who were trying to "settle their differences."

The ministers group said it will have a presence at Jake Yates, Jones, Madison, Sterling, and Worthing high schools.

At least two ministers will be on each campus at 11 a.m., shortly before early dismissal starts.

The president of "Ministers Supporting Precinct 7" said violence has decreased since the program has been in place.
