Channelview ISD mother hit by car after dropping child off at school

CHANNELVIEW – Authorities say a mother was hit by a car after dropping her child off for the first day of school at a local elementary school.

At around 7:30 this morning, the mother was crossing the road when she was hit. The 30-year-old victim was walking back home from Dezavala Elementary school in Channelview ISD when she stepped into the roadway on 2nd Street and was struck by a passing vehicle.

"I think the drivers should be more careful because the first day of school is always busy with people walking. I know a lot of people walking their kids around school," said parent Jessica Martinez.

She was one of many parents who also escorted her children to school for the first day.

"I knew there was going to be a lot of traffic, and people walking, and cars and everything," Martinez said.

She says it was very hectic Monday morning, especially in the school zone, where the speed limit is 20 miles per hour.

"Drivers need to pay more attention, especially on the first day of school," she said.

Officials said the driver stopped and that the driver was not speeding.

The victim sustained minor injuries but was transported to the hospital by EMS for observation.
