5-year-old accidentally shot by brother in southeast Houston

HOUSTON – A game of hide-and-seek inside a southwest Houston apartment nearly turned deadly Friday morning, according to police.

"The kids were playing hide-and-seek and they came across a gun that was loaded and one brother accidentally shot the other brother," Darrell Marshall, special victims unit investigator for the Houston Police Department, said.

A 5-year-old was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his arm.

"He was in good spirits," Marshall said.

The children were visiting another family at the Edgebrook Apartments in the 100 block of East Edgebrook when the shooting happened about 10 a.m., Friday.

Texas state law requires gun owners to secure loaded guns, preventing children from access.

Marshall was not sure Friday if the unidentified owner of the gun, a .380 handgun, would be charged with a crime.

The young victim was recovering at Texas Children's Hospital Friday afternoon.
