Teen who fired gun during fight arrested in attempted burglary case

HOUSTON – The teenager who fired a gun during a fight last month near Cy Lakes High School was arrested in an attempted burglary case.

John Randy Newkirk, 18, was arrested Tuesday after deputies say he was caught trying to break into a northwest Harris County home.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office says deputies had been searching for Newkirk as the suspect who opened fire during a Feb. 21 fight in a field near the 19000 block of Sandelford Drive.

According to investigators, the off-campus fight, which was witnessed by dozens, was between two students who had been feuding since the day before.

Newkirk and Aurelio Navarro, 19, are not students at the school, deputies say, but they had shown up to the fight as "backup" for one of the people involved. When Newkirk saw that Navarro was getting beaten badly, deputies say he discharged the gun several times.

No one was hurt by the gunfire. Navarro was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries from the physical altercation.

Newkirk is in Harris County Jail charged with discharge of a firearm and criminal trespass for the attempted burglary.

Investigators say they believe Newkirk is responsible for other crimes in the area and additional charges may be filed.
