A high school love triangle put one teenager in the hospital and another behind bars Tuesday morning in Conroe.
It happened in front of about a dozen Conroe High School students who were waiting for their bus at 6:30 this morning in the 300 block of Jewel Street.
Conroe police say 18-year-old Angel Hernandez, Jr. was waiting outside his former girlfriend's house when another teen, 19-year-old Jose Cardenas, arrived to take her and another girl to school.
“As soon as the girlfriend and her friend walked out of the house, the suspect became enraged, advanced on victim as he sat in the car, and began firing,” according to Conroe Police Sgt. Dorcy Riddle.
She says Hernandez fired four times into the car and Cardenas was hit at least once. When Hernandez' gun jammed, he pulled Cardenas out of his car, and began pistol whipping him.
Police say when Hernandez' former girlfriend, 17, tried to stop him, he began beating her. During the struggle, Cardenas tried to flee, but Hernandez left the girl, chased him down, and continued began hitting him again. As that was happening police say the girl managed to take the gun away from Hernandez.
About a dozen Conroe High School students were waiting for a bus just a few feet away. One of them was 15-year-old Jennifer Lopez.
“We weren't sure if it was for real or not.” Lopez said. “As soon as we saw him open the door and shoot him we all like ran that way. And then when we looked back they were fighting.”
A school bus pulled up as the violence was escalating. The quick thinking driver told Lopez and the other students to get on board, and then put the bus in reverse.
“It reversed and it picked us all up, and we were on the bus, and they were still fighting and then the cops arrived,” Lopez said.
Hernandez was arrested and taken to Montgomery County Jail. He's been charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder. Police say he's a former student at Conroe High school.
Cardenas and the girl are currently enrolled there. Cardenas was transported to Conroe Regional Hospital. Police say the girl's injuries were not serious.
None of the students on the bus were hurt according to investigators. Counselors were waiting for them when they arrived at the school this morning.
