Teen hit, killed while going to school

Detectives say teen, 15, rode skateboard when hit by car

HOUSTON – A teenager died after he was hit by a car on a northeast Harris County street, investigators said.

Harris County sheriff's deputies said the incident happened in the 800 block of Gulf Bank about 6:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Detectives said the 15-year-old was listening to music while riding a skateboard when he was hit by a car that was traveling in the same direction. Investigators said it was dark outside and the driver did not see the teen until it was too late.

"Driver remained at the scene," Deputy David Pearson said. "She had two children in the vehicle with her also."

The teen died at the scene. Relatives identified him as Brian Alvarado and officials said he attended Aldine High School.

"There is no sidewalk on the street," said Enoc Alvarado, the teen's uncle. "It's very dangerous for the kids."

Officials said they hope parents will talk to the children to make sure they're safe while walking to school.

"The thing to learn from this is talk to your kids about hazards, to stay out of the roadway -- especially in a dark road," Pearson said.

The incident is under investigation. No charges have been filed.
