Teen dies in car he got for Christmas

NEW CANEY, Texas – A teenager was killed when a car that he got for Christmas was involved in a collision in Montgomery County, investigators said.

State troopers said the wreck happened on F.M. 1485 near Loop 494 about 6 p.m. Thursday.

Officials said Adrian Hernandez, 18, got a 1990 Mazda RX7 for Christmas and let his 19-year-old brother, Ryan, take it for a spin. Adrian Hernandez was a passenger in the car, investigators said.

Detectives said Ryan Hernandez lost control of the car and veered into oncoming traffic. Another vehicle hit the Mazda and Adrian Hernandez died instantaneously, deputies said.

Ryan Hernandez suffered head and internal injuries and was hospitalized in critical condition. The driver of the other vehicle was also taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Investigators said they believe a combination of speed and slick roads caused the collision. Detectives said alcohol was not a factor.
