Teen accused of taking gun to school

Alvin ISD: Officer found gun on student at Nolan Ryan Junior High

ALVIN, Texas – A teenager took a gun to a junior high school on Thursday, school district officials said.

Alvin Independent School District officials said an officer at Nolan Ryan Junior High, 301 East House St., noticed a 13-year-old acting suspiciously about noon.

The officer asked the student if anything was wrong, but the student said no at first, officials said. The officer then noticed a bulge in the student's pocket and discovered that it was a small-caliber semiautomatic handgun, school district officials said.

The gun did not have a clip and the student was arrested, school district police said.

"The student was transported and released to the Brazoria County Juvenile Detention Center," Alvin ISD Police Chief Mike Putnal said. "Officer Turner acted quickly and decisively to minimize risk to the students and staff and should be commended for his actions."

The student has been charged with possession of a weapon where prohibited, which is a third-degree felony.

The school's principal sent a letter home to parents to let them know about the situation. The campus was never locked down, officials said.
