Teacher accused of hitting students with ruler

HOUSTON, Texas – A family in north Houston is demanding further action after a teacher was accused of tapping their daughter and other students on their heads to get their attention.

The incident happened last Wednesday at Highland Heights Elementary School on Paul Quinn Street.

According to an HISD investigation, the kids were allegedly a little rowdy after lunch and the teacher, Ms. Cleo Preston, wanted to get their attention.

In a statement to Local 2, an HISD spokesman said, "The teacher had students lining up to go back to class after lunch and the kids got distracted. She tapped kids on their heads to get their attention. HISD police determined there was no assault. The teacher was admonished and it will go to her file."

But that's not enough for the mother of one of the girls.

"I'm not saying she should get fired," said Melissa Perales. "I'm saying she should at least be suspended while they do a thorough investigation. I think she should go to classes on how to treat these kids."

Perales said her daughter is now afraid to go to school, but they learned Tuesday the girl will be moved to another class.

HISD does not allow corporal punishment, which is described by the state as "the deliberate infliction of physical pain by hitting, paddling, spanking, slapping, or any other physical force used as a means of discipline."
