Teacher accused of having sex with student

Student: Kathanna Culp gave him, friends alcohol, marijuana

HOUSTON – Tales of sex, blackmail and wild parties fueled by drugs and alcohol. This real-life drama centered on an ex-Spring Branch Independent School District teacher and the former student who allegedly became her lover has it all.

"I think it's pretty messed up that a teacher is having sex with a student," said Rafael Padilla, a student at Northbrook High School where 28-year-old Kathanna Culp once taught.

Spring Branch ISD fired Culp on Dec. 14, after administrators said she confessed to the principal that she was being blackmailed by a former student whom she claimed was threatening to expose their sexual relationship if she didn't give him money.

According to court papers, during the seven-month relationship Culp allegedly had with a high school senior, Culp hosted parties at her Montrose-area apartment and supplied her guests, some as young as 14, with liquor, beer and marijuana.

Police arrested the former Northbrook High School teacher earlier this week. Local 2 was unable to reach Culp or the former student for comment.

Students who know Culp and the former student had mixed opinions.

"I don't see what's wrong about it. He already graduated," said William Chan.

"Honestly, it's surprising. It's not something you expect. It hits everybody," said Louis Martinez.

Culp has been charged with improper relationship with a student.
