Tactical pens provide protection against attackers

Tiny self-defense tool costs between $6 and $40

SAN ANTONIO – Tactical pens are becoming popular self-defense tools these days.

KSAT 12 crime specialist Eddie Gonzales said the simple writing tool can turn into a weapon instantly.

"These tactical pens come in three different styles and while it's a tool that actually writes, it has a built-in safety feature that can break glass," Gonzales said.

Gonzales said criminals looking for easy, unsuspecting targets will get quite a surprise when they encounter someone who is well-trained in using the self-defense pen.

"Anything on that pen can be used as a weapon," Gonzales said. "You can use the front to come down, and when you use it, you want to use it with force."

Cheri Wintermute, who recently participated in a self-defense course taught by Gonzales, felt empowered when she tried the tactical pen during an attack scenario.

"Lots of attacks are about power. You don't want someone to have power over you ... so I would definitely feel safe going somewhere if I had this in my hands," she said.

The pens cost between $6 and $40.
