Suspect charged in NW Harris County robberies

HOUSTON – A man has been charged in connection with several robberies in northwest Harris County.

A woman said she returned home to an apartment complex in the 200 block of Dominion Park Drive Tuesday morning and heard someone behind her when she got near her door.

"As I was walking up to my front door, I heard footsteps," said the woman, who requested she not be identified. "I turned around and I saw him running toward me with the knife."

The woman offered the armed man her gym bag and stepped back. The man took it and kept running.

"It made me feel like I saw my life flash before my eyes," the woman said. "When I saw the knife, I said, 'OK, this guy is going to hurt me. I'm dead. Give him everything you have -- just give it to him.'"

Harris County sheriff's deputies said there were similar robberies at two nearby apartment complexes. All three of the victims said the robber appeared to have a hearing impairment, investigators said.

Detectives said the victims' descriptions led them to Rashad Mayo, 28, who has a hearing impairment. He's been charged with two counts of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.
