Astros' Carlos Correa hosts second annual golf tournament in Puerto Rico

HOUSTON – It was a warm and balmy day on Puerto Rico and some of Houston's biggest baseball stars converged on the Caribbean island Saturday for Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa's second annual charity golf tournament.

"This golf tournament is really important for us, you know. Obviously it's for a great cause so to bring it back to Puerto Rico, where I'm from, (it’s) just really special to me," Correa said.

He was joined at the El Conquistador Hotel's golf course by fans, his close friends and agent.

Correa said he wouldn't be participating in the golf tournament for fear of "looking bad," explaining his golf game is a little weak, but he was overjoyed to be in his home country for the event.

Astros pitchers Dallas Keuchel and Lance McCullers were both in Puerto Rico for the tournament.

Correa and his agent have made a concerted effort to give back to the less fortunate in recent months, forging a partnership with Houston-based Mattress Firm and the Salvation Army to donate hundreds of beds to disadvantaged children.

"We've been helping kids in Houston, with the beds to get a better night sleep, but now I'm going back to my hometown to do the same thing," Correa said.

He plans to continue his philanthropic homecoming in the city he grew up, Santa Isabel, where he will meet with children and some of his most loyal fans.
