Sugar Land's new performing arts building gets name, title sponsor

SUGAR LAND, Texas – Sugar Land's new performing arts building now has a name after the city council approved the name and title sponsor Wednesday. 

The $84 million Smart Financial Centre off Highway 59 and University Boulevard will house concerts and other performances.

Gary Tuma of Smart Financial Credit Union said he's thrilled to be a part of such an exciting venture. "(It's) a world-class venue with world-class entertainment, and as a credit union we feel like it's our responsibility to support the communities where our members reside," Tuma said.  

The venue will have flexible seating with moving walls. Officials say it can create an intimate space for 3,300 a crowd of almost 6,500.  Mayor Jimmy Thompson said the city is proud to support the arts and entertainment. "Not only are we going to bring new jobs to the city, entertainment and tourism to our city," he said. 

The centre is expected to draw 250,000 people to Sugar Land each year. Surrounding the facility will be retail and office space, a plaza, hotel and conference center. Construction is underway now. 

The Smart Financial Centre is expected to be completed in 2016.
