Store clerk ambushed, shot as he took out trash

HPD: Victim believes shooting may have been retaliation

HOUSTON – A convenience store clerk  is in the hospital after he was ambushed and shot behind the store he works at.

It happened around midnight Wednesday at the Hopcus Mini-Mart at 5902 Lockwood and Kelly in northeast Houston.

Investigators say the clerk was taking the trash out to the dumpster behind the store when someone opened fire.

The clerk was shot in the leg and in the back. He was taken to the hospital in serious, but stable condition.

Police do not believe robbery was a motive in this case, since nothing was taken.

Officers say the victim believes this may have been retaliation for refusing to sell beer to a customer Tuesday night.
