Standoff at east Houston motel ends with arrest

Man believed to be involved in jewelry theft, police say

HOUSTON – A three-hour standoff at an east Houston motel ended with an arrest early Monday afternoon.

The standoff started about 9 a.m. at the Motel 7 near the intersection of the East Freeway and Mercury Drive.

According to Houston police, officers were serving a search warrant at the motel and a man, identified as 48-year-old Kenneth Johnson, barricaded himself inside a bathroom.

Video from Sky2 over the scene showed that SWAT officers and at least one K-9 unit were at the scene.

Police said that the man was believed to be involved in a jewelry theft.

Authorities used tear gas to get Johnson to exit the room, police said. He was peacefully arrested just after noon.
