Smash-and-grab crime turns into police chase

HOUSTON – A thief rammed an SUV into a northeast Houston store but didn't take anything.

The SUV crashed through the Corner Store on Antoine and Acorn at 1:15 a.m. Friday.

Shortly after the crash, an HPD unit drove by, so the SUV took off.

The officer chased the suspect for about 10 minutes. The chase ended at a dead end on Oak Thicket Drive and Log View Drive. The driver jumped out and escaped.

"They didn't get the guy, but they got the car," said Prashant Shah, the store owner.

Shah said it will take about $20,000 to repair the damage to his store.

The owner said this is the second crime to hit his store in two weeks, when he was robbed at gunpoint.
