Simple ways to boost Wi-Fi performance

HOUSTON – Whether a movie on Netflix isn't buffering or a web page isn't loading fast enough, there are plenty of ways to beef up Wi-Fi speed.

One of the biggest problems that slow down connection speeds is the location of the wireless router. Wi-Fi Planet recommends placing it in the center of the desired coverage range.

Also, check security settings. Make sure password protection is enabled, so neighbors can't leech off the connection. And try changing to WPA2 encryption in the settings, because some of the other options could reduce bandwidth.

Those who live in a larger home and need better coverage might want to try a wireless extender. They're available online for as low as $50. If none of those solutions work, it might be time to upgrade the router itself.
