HOUSTON - A small plane crashed in a northwest Harris County field Monday.
The plane went nose-down shortly after 1 p.m. near Weiser Airpark, on Highway 290 at Telge Road.
Fire crews foamed down the aircraft, which started leaking fuel shortly after the crash.
"From what I understand, he was a student pilot," said Capt. Robert Rasa with the Cy-Fair Fire Department. "First units to the scene found the plane nose-down next to the ditch near the runway."
Officials said the pilot lost control of the plane.
"He was taking off and apparently he wasn't able to handle the crosswinds and lost control," Rasa said.
The pilot was able to jump to safety and was not injured.
The crash is under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
