Shots fired at officers in southeast Houston, police say

HOUSTON – Houston police are investigating after police said two gunmen opened fire on officers early Monday morning in southeast Houston.

Several SWAT members broke down the front door to the home on the 2100 block of Sampson around 10 a.m. We are told they were serving a warrant.

No one was inside the home after officers went inside.

Houston police Chief Art Acevedo said the incident happened just after 3:20 a.m.

Two undercover officers with the criminal apprehension team were in an unmarked vehicle on Sampson Street when two gunmen opened fire. About a dozen shots were fired, and several bullets hit their vehicle, barely missing the officers.

He said the officers did not shoot back, but instead they chased down the suspects who took off down I-45, and took them into custody.

"One of the bullets struck right in the drivers seat so we were very fortunate. I asked the officer, 'Are you a person of faith?' He said, 'Absolutely.' 'Well, God's been good to you today,'" said Acevedo.

No one was hurt.

Police said the two gunmen shot from a nearby front porch, which is where investigators collected 10 to 15 shell casings.

Police also combed an area a couple blocks away looking for the gun.

"I'm very proud of the fact that officers demonstrate phenomenal professionalism," Acevedo said.

The two suspects are behind bars and are facing several charges.
