Shoplifter fights officer at JCPenney in League City

Woman could face robbery charge

League City, Texas – A shoplifter got into a fight with a store employee Monday afternoon as the accused thief tried to get away, investigators said.

It happened at the JCPenney on the Gulf Freeway in League City.

Store surveillance tape showed a woman walking into the store with a purse over her shoulder.

League City police believe the woman had an empty JCPenney bag in her purse, filled it up with $200 worth of socks and school uniforms and tried to get away.

"The loss prevention in the store noticed a woman who was putting items into a JCPenney bag that she hadn't purchased," League City Director of Communications Kristi Wyatt said. "The shoplifter walked out of the store and security personnel followed her and said, 'Let's go back into the store and talk about the items in the bag.'"

The video showed the two get into a fight that started between the front doors and continued outside on the front porch.

Police said the woman left behind two things -- the bag of socks and school uniforms officers say she was trying to steal, plus her own purse.

Officers said the woman has not been arrested but could face a robbery charge.
