Man wounded in shootout with officers, police say

HOUSTON – A man was injured Thursday in a shootout with police in northeast Houston.

Officers were called around 10:22 p.m. to the Villas of Colt Run apartments in the 7600 block of East Houston Road. A woman called police to warn them about her male friend, who she said was coming over to hurt himself, or someone else.

When officers arrived, police said the man was holding a weapon, standing next to his vehicle in the driveway.

Police said the man fired at least once. The officers, identified as HPD Officers S. Jordan and P. Flores-Ramirez, returned fire, hitting the man.

According to police, the man walked toward the officers and fired again. The officers shot and again hit the man, who dropped his weapon and fell to the ground, police said.

"That suspect fired at least one round, then fired multiple rounds at officers. Our officers took cover and fired multiple shots in return,"  Executive Assistant Chief Matt Slinkard said.

He was taken to Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital in critical condition. Police said he is expected to survive.

The gun that was recovered was determined to be stolen, police said.

A resident at the complex recorded the incident from the balcony of her apartment.

Witnesses said they saw the whole thing unfold and that the man who was shot by police was not backing down.

One woman said she saw the suspect walk toward police with a gun, telling them to shoot.

"He was yelling, 'Shoot me, shoot me, kill me, kill me.' I said, 'Are you crazy?' The guy kept walking towards him, saying, 'Shoot me. Shoot me. Kill me. Kill me.' And the guy kept walking and the cop shot him," neighbor Jennifer Roberson said.

Officers Jordan and Flores-Ramirez, who are assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division, were not injured. They were sworn in as officers in April 2008 and January 2017, respectively.

The case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
