GALENA PARK, Texas – A shelter in place for the Galena Park area has been lifted.
Around 11 a.m. Saturday, officials reported that a small amount of Hydrogen sulfide leaked at the Lyondell Basell Houston Refinery plant. Area residents reported a rotten egg smell as far away as Deerbrook Mall in Humble.
Officials with the Galena Park Fire Department said the leak isn't toxic, but issued the shelter in place as a precautionary measure. It was lifted around 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
"Hydrogen sulfide is a compound that we treat with great caution and great respect. And that was the reason that there's a benefit for calling a shelter in place. But because the concentrations were extremely low, they did not pose a threat to any people," said David Harpole with Lyondell Chemical Company.
