HOUSTON - On the same day he appeared on "Celebrity Apprentice" with Donald Trump, Houston businessman Farouk Shami invited cameras inside his home Sunday.
Local 2 was at Shami's home in the Woodlands as a veritable who's who in Houston's styling community watched his company take center stage on "Celebrity Apprentice."
Shami has built a global brand from a single salon in Texas and put his success to good use. The entrepreneur has become equally know for his philanthropic efforts. Guests honored him Sunday for his charitable efforts and work to raise Houston to the national stage.
The episode marked the third time Shami's global brand of Chi flat irons and BioSilk has been featured on the show.
"We enjoy (the show) and that's why we do it and why we'll keep doing that. It's been a great exposure for us," he said.
Local 2's Robert Arnold asked Shami how much input he has when he appears on the show.
"Well, you know, our input is assigning the task," said Shami. "The other celebrities they do the rest of the work."
As guests mingled, enjoyed a Mediterranean buffet and a quick styling, there was more talk about Shami's generosity than his business.
"More importantly, stand behind a man that's doing a lot of good in the community," said Houston Dynamo player Michael Chabala.
Shami is helping expand the Lone Star Community College's fledgling cosmetology program as well planning an entrepreneurship program.
"In today's economy, not everyone is going to work for someone else, they're going to have their own business," said Linda Head, the associate vice chancellor at Lone Star.
Shami's work for Hurricane Sandy victims helped him win this year's Beautymaker Award from California-based BE Magazine.
Shami says it is his success that allows him to give back. He credits "Celebrity Apprentice" with helping to continue that success.
"It's a long-term advertisement definitely, putting out name out there and it works very well," said Shami.
Shami said he'll keep partnering with "Celebrity Apprentice" for as many shows as they want.
Marilu Henner won the episode competition on Sunday night. In honor of Henner, Shami said he will donate $1 to her charity, Alzheimer's Association, Alsays for every new 'like' on his company's Facebook pages between now and next Sunday.
