Several schools reopen after massive flood damage

HOUSTON – Monday marks the first day several school districts will reopen after heavy storms hit and flooded parts of the Houston area. But several campuses are still cleaning up.

Cypress Falls High School was one of the campuses hit hard by the storms. The school's gym and theater were damaged by flood waters. Crews were busy at the end of last week making sure the buildings were ready to take students. Of the 53 campuses with water damage, Cy-Falls High took the brunt of it.

Cy-Fair schools will spend an estimated $4 million on repairs.

At Klein Collins High School Friday, crews were making sure nothing looked out of place for classes Monday. Twenty-three classrooms had water and furniture damage. A tree hit the school's greenhouse and a light pole fell on the baseball field.

Other schools affected by flood damage were Sam Rayburn, Deer Park and La Porte.

While insurance will pay for most of the damage, districts will have to cover the deductibles. We've heard that Cy-Fair will apply for reimbursement through FEMA.

At least eight people have died in connection with Monday's floods in the greater Houston area, officials said.

Local fire and police departments performed more than 1,800 rescues across Harris County and surrounding areas, emergency management officials said.

According to officials, last week's flooding is the worst in the area since Tropical Storm Allison hit in 2001.
