Seven Lakes HS student appears in court after gun scare at school

KATY, Texas – The Katy ISD high school student who officials said brought a gun to school appeared before a judge Tuesday morning.

Investigators say Thomas Barfield, 19, brought a weapon to Seven Lakes High on Monday.

Students and faculty evacuated the high school late Monday morning while authorities searched inside and around campus. During that search, investigators said they found a zip gun in Barfield's backpack.

According to Katy police, officers also found a rifle inside Barfield's car.

Barfield faced a judge in a Fort Bend County courtroom Tuesday morning for a felony charge of possession of a prohibited weapon.

Bond for Barfield was set at $20,000. During the court hearing, the high school senior requested a court-appointed lawyer.

Classes resumed Tuesday for students and faculty at the high school.
