HOUSTON – Friday night inside Minute Maid Park, there was a visible increased police presence.
It was the first game since Monday's bombing at the Boston marathon.
Group gatherings will never be the same.
"I actually think it's a good idea with things that are happening now," said Crystal Garza, an Astros fan who attended the home game Friday night. "We need more security. Large crowds always make me nervous, but especially now."
Details of the security plan were not made public but Local 2 did learn that bomb sniffing dogs were brought in before the game to search garbage cans. The dogs were also used to search underneath random cars parked near the ballpark.
The heightened security will continue through the weekend in Houston. The National MS Society - Lone Star: 2013 BP MS 150 bike ride will attract thousands of people and so will the International Festival downtown.
Even as crews worked to set up for these events, police stood watch nearby.
"We want the public to come out and enjoy themselves," said Houston Police Chief Charles McClelland, Jr. "And not be afraid to participate in mass, festive events."
