Search for 12 missing Marines continues

12 Marines missing after two helicopters crashed off coast of Oahu

The search continues into its fourth day for 12 Marines missing after two helicopters crashed off the coast of the Hawaiian island of Oahu.

Among the missing are two Houston-area natives—Maj. Shawn Campbell, and Cpl. Matthew Drown.

Both men’s families are still in the Houston area, but Campbell's mother tells Channel 2 the Marine Corp has made arrangements for her to travel to Hawaii Wednesday.

The search efforts expanded over the weekend, stretching from the North Shore of the Island to the Waianae.

Crews have taken to the ground, air and sea to look for the Marines and have battled treacherous surf and rainy weather.

"(It is a) very difficult time for all of us involved,” said Shayne Enright of Honolulu Emergency Services. “This is a nightmare for all first responders, something that you never ever want to do, but we want the families out there to know that we are doing everything that we can."

The U.S. Coast Guard has taken the lead on the search efforts and sent divers out Monday to continue the underwater search; they will be assisted by a U.S. Navy ship with sonar capabilities.

Family members of Drown say they remain hopeful for some good news; they describe Drown as a hero who is loved by his family and friends.

The family requests that the community show their support with yellow ribbons and American flags.
