HOUSTON – In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, many schools in Harris County are asking for extra security help.
Deputies will stop by schools to check out security and patrolling campuses.
Most school districts in the county have their own police, but three have asked the Precinct 4 Constables Office for added security after the Connecticut tragedy.
Deputies will patrol about 30 schools in the Klein, Tomball, and Spring school districts.
"We want to make sure they know we're there if they need anything as a deterrent, most of all. Visibility is they key," said Lt. Ronnie Glaze.
The added police presence isn't only about deterrence. Deputies said it also reassures students and teachers whose sense of security may be more fragile than it was five days ago.
"It think it gives them another little comfort to see law enforcement there, whether it be us or whoever, just as long as there is a cop around they can see," said Glaze.
