Students at a northeast Houston middle school spent part of Thursday afternoon on lockdown as police searched for a suspected gunman.
Police say it all started with an assault call at a nearby apartment complex at around noon. They alerted the staff at Forest Brook Middle School after a suspect took off running into a wooded area.
The suspect took off in such a hurry he left his car running and its door open in the middle of an intersection near Tidwell and Wayside. Police say the man ran into a wooded area after they tried to pull him over. Believing he may have been armed they alerted administrators at a nearby school and spread out, looking for the man.
"It's scary. I mean for a man to be out -- and with all of these kids around. It's scary," said one neighbor.
With the school on lockdown, police processed the suspect's vehicle, then towed it away from the scene.
A spokesperson tells local 2 the lockdown was lifted at around 3:15 p.m. before students got out of school.
